Biblical Scripture

Exodus

  • If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman's husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. And it was so: for he rose up early on the morrow, and thrust the fleece together, and wringed the dew out of the fleece, a bowl full of water. And Gideon said unto God, Let not thine anger be hot against me, and I will speak but this once: let me prove, I pray thee, but this once with the fleece; let it now be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew. And God did so that night: for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground. Judges 6:36-40

  • In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. The Art of War

Project Gutenberg text 132

I 18

All warfare is based on deception.

II 6

There is no instance of a country having benefited from prolonged warfare.

III 2b

Supreme excellence consists in breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting.

III 17

Thus we may know that there are five essentials for victory:

  1. He will win who knows when to fight and when not to fight.
  2. He will win who, prepared himself, waits to take the enemy unprepared.

IV 2

To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.

IV 11-12

What the ancients called a clever fighter is one who not only wins, but excels in winning with ease. Hence his victories bring him neither reputation for wisdom nor credit for courage.
